Unused Raimi SPIDER-MAN Dr. Octopus Concept Art by Jim Martin

Spider-Man (2002) concept art by Jim Martin

Check out Spider-Man concept art by Jim Martin!

Did you know Doctor Octopus was almost in Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man film?

In Spider-Man (2002), the villain was Green Goblin (Wilem Dafoe) and in Spider-Man 2 (2004) the villain was Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina), but I found some concept illustrations for the first film that included Dr. Octopus. So what gives? Artist Jim Martin confirmed that he was "later taken out of the story and put in the sequel." One draft of the script had both Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus as villains, but Doc Ock was removed in Scott Rosenberg's rewrite to simplify the story.

Jim Martin is a professional concept artist who's worked on major projects like The Matrix Reloaded (2003), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1995).

Amazing SPIDER-MAN 3 Sandman Concept Art Video with E.J. Krisor

Check out Spider-Man 3 behind-the-scenes video on Venom with E. J. Krisor!

The fluid look of Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) in Spider-Man 3 is the main reason Sam Raimi wanted him as the villain. They said he's a great "visual character." Spider-Man star Tobey McGuire said he'd been "waiting for Sandman to be a villain" saying, "I think Sandman's qualities are very difficult to deal with in that he can shape-shift, basically, using sand in any form. So, it's really hard to defeat that character. And that's the great thing about Spider-Man from the comic books, too, that Spider-Man was generally the weaker of the two fighters, and he would have to find the villains vulnerabilities in order to defeat them."

The fluid look of Sandman was hard to achieve. But digital effects supervisor Ken Hahn said, "We were given a lot of conceptual art that was very helpful from E. J. Krisor."

E. J. Krisor is a professional concept and costume illustrator who's worked on big budget movies like The Amazing Spider-Man (2013), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and Superman Returns (2006).

Sony released this behind-the-scenes webisode to promote the movie in 2007.

Here's some concept art from the video and other artwork by E.J. Krisor of Sandman and New Goblin.

See What Green Goblin and Web-Shooters Almost Looked Like in SPIDER-MAN Concept Art by James Carson

Spider-Man concept art by James Carson
Check out Spider-Man concept art by James Carson!

The most controversial change in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films is the use of organic web-shooters instead of Parker's homemade mechanical shooters. But the concept made it all the way to the prop design phase first trailer before it was dropped in favor of organic web-shooters.

Marc Webb in The Amazing Spider-Man restored the comic book's mechanical web-shooters and many fans were relieved. The other controversial change was using a static "Green Goblin" mask instead of a face. I already showed concept art of a prosthetic Green Goblin mask by Miles Teves and now I'm sharing unused designs by James Carson.

Concept art by Carson shows some other ideas for the Green Goblin costume and designs for the mechanical web-shooter and the web-shooter that grows from Peter Parker's body.

James Carson is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on Hollywood blockbuster movies like X-Men: First Class (2011), Tim Burton's Superman and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

SPIDER-MAN 2 Subway Train Attack Storyboards by Chris Buchinsky

Check out storyboards of the Spider-Man 2 Subway train attack by Chris Buchinsky!

The most exciting scene in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies was the Doctor Octopus' attack on a subway train in Spider-Man 2 (2004). All those people flying around and Doc's arms swinging on the train are the best of the films.  One of the storyboard artists that worked on Spider-Man 2 was Chris Buchinsky and he kindly shared these storyboards with me.

Buchinsky is a professional storyboard artist who's worked on films such as Green Lantern (2011) Seabiscuit (2003) and Lost (2010).

Check out the rest of the storyboards after the jump (click to enlarge).
