The Self-Sufficient Energy Neutral Villa Kogelhof by Paul de Ruiter

Taking six years to create and construct, the design of Villa Kogelhof is based on complete autarky: the house is energy neutral. By utilizing several techniques, the villa maintains a comfortable climate all year long, while being extremely energy efficient. The goal for the villa was to be self-sufficient; to generate its own energy, to heat its own water and to recycle its own garbage.

The client desired a simple, abstract, yet spectacular villa and the result is a modern composition consisting of two square stacked volumes: one underground and one floating above ground. It is designed as an uncompromising glass box, supported by a steel V-frame.

Preservation and Protection:

The estate is part of a larger program initiated by the government, which aims to connect regional ecological zones throughout the country. One approaches the villa via a deserted road that runs across the estate. The current owner bought the site, once farmland, seven years ago. It is a protected habitat for animals and plants and a major tourist draw in the area, open to the public. Permission to build a house on the land was given only on the condition that it was returned to its pre-agricultural state.

The planting of some 71,000 six-year-old trees hint at the future of the estate as ‘a villa in the woods’ and were planted already in 2006. A rectangular pond was dug, requiring the removal of 70,000 cubic metres of soil.

Contrast of Land and Structure:

After ten minutes’ drive across the estate, you reach the underground entrance via a sloping driveway. The underground volume of the house consists of the entrance, parking, storage and a workspace which looks out over the pond.

The living area is situated in the floating glass box above ground. Its plan is open and consists of a living room, the kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom and a patio.

The façade is completely made of glass and offers spectacular views over the surrounding landscape. The natural setting contrasts with the technical and modern appearance of the villa, that refers to the Dutch world famous coastal defense dams known as The Delta works.

Energy Neutral Self-sufficiency:

To make sure Villa Kogelhof is energy neutral, the façade offers an important contribution. This so called climate-façade is composed of an outer layer of clear insulated glass from floor to ceiling and an inner layer of sun-reflecting fabric that can be rolled up and unrolled. When the fabric is lowered, an air cavity is formed in which the air from the villa is extracted of a central ventilation system. The house is heated by a central heating system combined with an air pump. Warm water will be generated using a biomass pellet stove, in which wood will be fired from the wood out of the private forest of the estate. Electricity will be generated from the PV-cells on the roof and in the near future also from the planned windmill.

Awards
Villa Kogelhof has won the prestigious Dutch ARC13 Architecture Award. The Kogelhof estate has received the FIABCI Prix d’Excellence Award in de category: Sustainable Development & Residential (Low Rise). Villa Kogelhof is also published in the book Häuser des Jahres: Die 50 besten einfamilienhäuser 2013.

The First Flat-Packed Wooden Bike You Assemble Yourself. The Sandwichbike by Basten Leijh.

It's new. It's cool. It comes in the mail and you put it together. Dubbed the Sandwichbike, this Dutch Design original was inspired by the concept of flat packing, home assembly and Bleigh Industries' never-ending drive to create exceptional products.

Presented during the 2013 Salone del Mobile, the Sandwichbike wooden bicycle by Dutch designer Basten Leijh will start production. Made of two wooden panels, this bicycle was inspired by the concept of flat packing and home assembly.

The Sandwichbike fits in a small, flat package, so they can send it to you by post. The fun will begin the moment the postman rings your doorbell. Everything you need is in the box including the tools, so you can start assembling right away. In total, there are less than 50 parts. If you can make a sandwich, you can surely build a Sandwichbike.

To enable to make it a build-it-yourself product, Basten Leijh rethrought most aspects of the classic velocipede. Instead of a welded frame, the vehicle is engineered as a “sandwich” of two weather coated frames of layered plywood. Bonded together by “smart cylinders”, the frames and components become a durable and attractive piece of technology.

Video:

The price of a Sandwichbike starts at € 799. They start delivering by post in October this year! Bleijh is now taking pre-orders at Sandwichbikes.com.

Droog's New Hotel In Amsterdam Opens September 16th. See All That It Has To Offer.

At the historical centre of Amsterdam, on September 16th, 2012, Droog will open a hospitality experience like no other. Hôtel Droog is a place where you can come for a drink, a bite to eat, exclusive shopping, exhibitions, beauty advice, a stroll in the garden, a lecture series, or even a bed for the night. Featuring the Droog Store, Gallery, Dining Room, Fairy Tale Garden, Beauty at Cosmania, Fashion at Kabinet, Products at Weltevree, and the one and only Bedroom, Hôtel Droog is conspicuously housed in 700 square metres in a 17th century building, promising to be a new cultural home in the heart of Amsterdam.

“The concept of a hotel has been reversed. Whereas a hotel is usually mostly about sleeping, here we have enlarged and emphasized all the aspects that many hotels also offer and made them central to the hotel experience—and it even has a room to sleep in,” says Renny Ramakers, co-founder and director of Droog. “Hotel Droog brings all of our activities under one roof—from curation to product design, exhibitions and lectures—and invites people to plug in as they choose.”

The new hotel, a 10-room member-only hotel, concept restaurant and exhibition space was designed by Tokyo-based Atelier Bow-Wow.

Leaving the canal-facing front façade intact, Atelier Bow-Wow created an intricate inner courtyard façade inspired by Amsterdam’s historic architecture.

The hotel restaurant will host new concept dinners by invited designers and chefs, improvising with local market left-overs and practicing the act of eating slowly yet attentively.

The street level will house an on-going program of Droog exhibitions and events.

EXHIBITIONS at GALLERY

The Gallery is an exhibition space curated by Droog or by specially invited curators. This prominent and beautiful 160 square metre space features the latest in design, art, and fashion and previews upcoming developments in the creative industry. The Gallery aims to create a dialogue between design and society by hosting workshops and discussions.

ESCAPE at FAIRY TALE GARDEN

Enter a magical fairy tale garden. Designed by French Designers Claude Pasquer and Corinne Détroyat, the courtyard has been transformed into a shelter for biodiversity, where natural and artificial elements intermingle.

All elements are functional, attracting, feeding, watering, and providing respite for birds, butterflies, insects, flowers, edible plants and humans alike. Mixing seamlessly with abundant plantation, synthetic turf covers the winding pathways to create a sense of stillness. The garden is a real mixture of serenity and joy.

FOOD, DRINKS & DISCUSSIONS at THE DINING ROOM
The Dining Room is a simple, elegant and airy room that overlooks the flourishing garden. Enjoy some of the neighbourhood’s finest homemade recipes or freshly made smorrebrod sandwiches.

The menu is bound by one philosophy: simple, healthy, delicious dishes created with well-sourced and seasonal ingredients.

The Dining Room is open for lunch and special events, lectures and performances. In honour of the building’s history as home of the textile guild, Droog commissioned Dutch artist Berend Strik for a reinterpretation of Rembrandt’s famous De Staalmeesters, a painting that once hung here.

SLEEP at THE ONE AND ONLY BEDROOM
The top floor of Hotel Droog is for guests who might like to stay the night or more. Central but quiet, the brightly-lit space, with bedroom, living area and kitchen, provides a superb view over Amsterdam rooftops.
