J&B Commissioned A Tattoo Artist To Ink 25 Limited Edition Bottles of Scotch.

The idea to tattoo the bottles was devised by French design studio Button Button as an unusual way to commemorate J&B's heritage.

J&B Rare scotch blend whisky was born in London second part of XIXth century from famous wine and spirits merchant Justerini & Brooks willing to create its own house whisky. It is exactly at the same period that tattoo started to spread through London, after the trend coming from Royal Navy sailors used to come back from distant travels sporting tattoo, finally reached British upper class when Prince Bertie (later Edward VII) was first tattooed in 1862 before to spread over all Great Britain and Europe.
Button Button says "As a celebration of this origin we decided to tattoo 25 bottles for real. First thing, we fully covered bottles with a latex skin, like the one used to practice tattoo, slim enough to respect bottle shape and strong enough to be hit many times my tattooer's needles… We decided to color skins with a human skin color to strengthen the tattoo perception and create something intriguing…

Then we asked Sébastien Mathieu, owner of Le Sphinx a private tattoo room in Paris, to support us in this adventure.

Excited by the challenge he immediately accepted… with only a partial idea of how complex it would be… Actually he spent around 20 hours to tattoo each bottle.

Each of the 25 bottle is tattooed from a single design but intrinsically, each bottle is unique."

The 25 bottles, presented in a rough black silkscreened wooden box, were for sale this past winter in Paris at Publicis Drugstore and at L'éclaireur rue Herold. They sold out within a week.

That Dad Who Colors In His Kids' Drawings Is A Wicked Tattoo Artist, Inventor, Philanthropist and Environmental Activist.

We could all use a dad like Fred Giovannitti. Heck, we could all use a friend like him. An inventor and philanthropist, tattoo artist and environmental engineer, Fast Company has profiled him, he has spoken at TED and now he's become famous as a Dad for coloring in his childrens' drawings.

Fred Giovannitti (aka Redditor Tatsputin) trades his quiet, rural Delaware lifestyle for 10 days per month as a high-end tattoo artist in glamorous Las Vegas, Nevada at Tatlantis Allied Arts and Sciences.

above: some examples of Fred's incredible skin art

By digging deep to reveal common interests, Fred believes we can form personal bonds between ourselves and our teammates/partners/clients, allowing us to connect with each other’s personal history and develop ideas that have the ability to take on lives of their own. Giovannitti uses this philosophy to draw inspiration for each project he takes on, and the relationships he has shared with his client have led to many successful ventures—from spiritual enrichment to ocean cleaning innovations. In the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, inventors were called upon to develop a mass-scale oil cleanup solution. Fred responded by co-developing an oil-cleanup device at Southern California's VorTek Recovery Solutions.

above: Fred's daughter and son and the first drawing of theirs that he colored in.

The constant traveling to Las Vegas led him to use this time as a personal challenge to see how much he could fill per flight into a single page in his sketchbook. He begins each drawing at take off and ceases upon landing. He posts the results on one of his two Instagram profiles, Mile High Moleskine and his personal Instagram Profile at It's Pronounced Jovaneti.

One of his latest collections of 'Airborne Art' is that of coloring in his children's playful drawings. The compelling side by side images have been making the rounds all over the internet and I simply couldn't resist posting the pics here for you as well. Some of them he drew in with colored pencils, others were done on an iPad:

The Hippest Christmas Nutcracker You'll Find This Year.

Last year, West Elm carried some cool modern versions of traditional nutcrackers that I posted on my list of hip christmas decor over at ThisNext, but not this year. But alas, no need to cry because this year CB2 has one of the hippest takes on a traditional nutcracker.

The Inked nutcracker is carved from white pine and painted red, white and black. He is tatted with "Naughty" on his right arm with an intricate montage of skull and candy cross bones. And the word "Nice" scripts his left arm in a cozy scene of fireplace logs and mistletoe.

The man in the big red suit has a permanent place in this nutcracker's heart in the form of "Santa Baby" etched on his chest. "Ho Ho Ho" banner decks out his handle. Cool.

dimensions: 4.75"Wx4.25"Dx16.25"H
details:
• White pine
• Silk screen print and painted details
• Wipe with clean dry cloth
• Made in China

Plastic Fantastic. A Look At All Of Good Ol' Sailor Brand's Bottle Designs For Their 3 Vodkas, Beer and Now, Gin.

Good ol’ Sailor is Galatea's brand for traditional, organic and innovative vodka, classic beer and - launching this month, Gin. Besides being great-tasting, Sailor Vodka, Beer and Gin add two important dimensions: ecological thinking brought into liquor products, and the way to wrap them in playful, artistic designs by female illustrators, in a male dominated and often conservative niche.

Good ol’ Sailor Vodkas are produced in the modern, artisanal distillery of Swedish Vodka in Motala, using the fantastic water of the great lake Vättern.

In July of 2012, the original Good ol’ Sailor Vodka was awarded the Silver Medal in the International Wine & Spirits Competition, the world’s largest and most important of its kind. No other product in the tasting category received a higher note from the judges.

above: The original Good ol Sailor Vodka now has a different image on the front than when first launched.

Corresponding to their ecological ingredients the Sailor Vodka, Sailor Beer and Sailor Gin are packaged in PET bottles, a somewhat unusual choice, and an outstanding choice from an environmental point of view. PET bottles imply a reduced environmental impact compared to glass bottles - as much as 58% less energy is being used in the process, and as much as 77% less greenhouse gases are generated.

Two upcoming female illustrators – successful within fashion and tattoo art – were challenged to illustrate the traditional theme of vodka and the sailor, and to add new life into the traditional legends, as well as to the Sailor brand. Branding and packaging was done by Entire Studio of Sweden.

The Artists:
Tattoo artist Aniela of Sweden's Flash Fighters Tattoo created the colorful and much renowned design for Good ol’ Sailor Vodka and Beer (although the vodka bottle now has a sailor on the front instead of the original clipper ship design because the beer now has the clipper ship art):

Fashion illustrator Lindalovisa Fernqvist has made the illustrations for Good ol’ Sailor Jawa and Jungle bottles:

The Collection:

Good ol’ Sailor Vodka

Sweden’s first PET bottled vodka is made of organically grown Swedish wheat and comes in a Swedish made PET bottle for minimal environmental impact. The design of the bottle is developed in cooperation with Aniela, one of Sweden’s top tattoo artists. To be served chilled as schnapps or used as a cocktail ingredient. The bottle is recyclable.

In July of 2012 Good ol’ Sailor Vodka was most successfully awarded with Silver Medal in the International Wine & Spirits Competition, the world’s largest and most important of its kind. No other product in the tasting category received a higher note from the judges.

Good ol’ Sailor Vodka is distilled four times and has a pure aroma with hints of wheat bread, white pepper and citrus. The flavour is soft with notes of wheat, citrus and cardamom.

STYLE Unseasoned spirit > Vodka | COLOUR Clear bright | INGREDIENTS Orgnaically grown wheat | ABV 37.5 % | SEASON All year round | TRAY 0,70 l PET bottle

Good ol’ Sailor Jawa

Good ol’ Sailor Jawa is the 2011 limited continuation of Good ol’ Sailor Vodka. The Jawa first launch of 5000 bottles sold out at Galatea in a very short time. Jawa comes in a new design cooperation, this time with fashion illustrator Lindalovisa Fernqvist. Her interpretation of Good ol’ Sailor Jawa derives from a modern pirate figure, a tough woman who steeres her own ship on the seven seas and finds her own treasures. The label radiates integrity and strength with a playful twist. The taste of the coffee inspired vodka is sensed already in the picture.

Good ol’ Sailor Jawa is produced from the ecological vodka Good ol’ Sailor and contains spices from the equatorial areas, such as coffee, vanilla and nuts.

Distilled four times Good ol’ Sailor Jawa has a pure aroma with hints of coffee, vanilla and nuts. The flavour is soft with notes of wheat, coffee, vanilla and nuts.

STYLE Flavoured spirit > Vodka | COLOUR Clear bright | INGREDIENTS Orgnaically grown wheat and spices | ABV 37.5 % | SEASON Limited edition | TRAY 0,70 l bottle

Good ol’ Sailor Jungle

The Good ol’ Sailor Jungle is the summer version of the ecological vodka family, with a taste of guava and passion fruit. Just like with the success Good ol’ Sailor Jawa it is Lindalovisa Fernqvist who has created the original design on the bottle portraying a strong woman in a dreamy, tropical world of pirates.

The organic Good ol’ Sailor Jungle is a classical combination of fruity, fresh and sour, even before the drink is mixed. It is a modern liquor where the parts are right from the start, which makes it easier for the consumer and gives a better result when mixing drinks, says Sören Sörensen, product developer for Sailor Vodka.

Jungle has a clean, fruity taste of passion fruit and guava, freshness of citrus and a pleasant rigor of pink grapefruit.

Good ol’ Sailor Beer

A bottle with tattoo illustrations from ancient times when sea monsters raged the oceans and tattoos were for beefy sailors with a beard. With this feeling as a starting point we are bringing new life into the legendary brand Good ol’ Sailor Beer.

“Sailor” is now more accessible than ever, thanks to the choice of packaging. The PET bottle is itself a brilliant thing when it comes to beer. You can bring it anywhere. Good ol’ Sailor Beer is extra suitable for the summer events or picnics.

A light malty aroma with a touch of citrus. Fine, fruity flavour with streaks of citrus and malt. Well balanced, slightly bitter with an aromatic finish.

STYLE Pale Lager > European lager | COLOUR Straw yellow | INGREDIENTS Barley malt and hops | ABV 5,0 % | | SEASON All year round | TRAY 0.33 l PET bottle

Good ol' Sailor Gin

After the highly successful series of Good ol 'Sailor spirits, they've expanded to include a gin this month. After three vodkas, IWSC medal winners, Galatea's team has developed a gin with the same high level of originality.

Distilled with high quality organic grain, it's also packaged in environmentally friendly PET packaging and is a London Dry Gin flavored with juniper and six herbs and spices. Good ol 'Sailor Gin combines the natural raw taste of alcohol with a well balanced juniper and clear fresh tones of citrus and orange. In addition to the seven classic spices consisting of juniper, licorice root, angelica, orrisrot, coriander, and lemon peel-sevilla, the Good ol 'Sailor Gin is also enriched with a secret spice. The elegant element of exotic spiciness makes Good ol 'Sailor to a gin for connoisseurs.

Good ol Sailor brand beverages are carried at all of Sweden's Systembolaget stores.

Scott Campbell Breaks Out Of His Shell. Graphite Illustrated Ostrich Egg Interiors.

It's no secret I've been a fan of Scott Campbell's work for awhile now, having written about him numerous times. The Brooklyn-based tattoo artist has quickly became a celeb favorite and force in the art world. He's inked Marc Jacobs (both Marc and Scott have his "Bros before Hos" tatts), created leather bags for Louis Vuitton (and drew faux tatts on the runway models with a Sharpie marker), cut up currency, burnt tortillas and is now drawing inside broken Ostrich eggs with graphite.

above: It's a skull. It's a woman. It's both. And beautifully rendered on the interior of an Ostrich Egg shell by Scott Campbell.

His untitled eggs feature tattoo-like imagery delicately rendered on the interior of the shells. The eggs illustrate the juxtaposition between birth (the eggs) and death (the morbid skeletal imagery inside them).
