Thrilling SPIDER-MAN 3 Concept Art by James Carson

The new series of Spider-Man movies has taken over from Sam Raimi's films and The Amazing Spider-Man 2comes out this year. The second Spider-Man sequel stirred controversy with it's portrayal of Harry Osborn (nicknamed "New Goblin") and Venom, but the visuals are undeniably stunning. For example, Entertainment Weekly called "Sandman" one of their 10 greatest CG characters of 2007.

One of the artists on the film, James Carson, created some thrilling and dynamic concept art for the film of Sandman robbing a bank, building a sand castle for this daughter, New Goblin props, set designs and more. So I thought I'd share some of my favorites. Carson is a professional concept illustrator who's worked on blockbuster films like Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Spider-Man(2002) and X-Men: First Class (2011).

Amazing SPIDER-MAN 3 Sandman Concept Art Video with E.J. Krisor

The fluid look of Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) in Spider-Man 3 is the main reason Sam Raimi wanted him as the villain.They said he's a great "visual character." Spider-Man star Tobey McGuire said he'd been "waiting for Sandman to be a villain" saying, "I think Sandman's qualities are very difficult to deal with in that he can shape-shift, basically, using sand in any form. So, it's really hard to defeat that character. And that's the great thing about Spider-Man from the comic books, too, that Spider-Man was generally the weaker of the two fighters, and he would have to find the villains vulnerabilities in order to defeat them."

The fluid look of Sandman was hard to achieve. But digital effects supervisor Ken Hahn said, "We were given a lot of conceptual art that was very helpful from E. J. Krisor."

E. J. Krisor is a professional concept and costume illustrator who's worked on big budget movies like The Amazing Spider-Man (2013), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and Superman Returns (2006).

The life of a concept artist can be a dream come true designing artwork for hit films that thrill audiences.

Unfortunately, like any job, it can be difficult because of the environment on the job. One film like that was Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 (2007) for artist Phil Saunders.

Saunders is a professional concept artist who's worked on blockbuster films like Iron Man 3 (2013) Avengers and TRON Legacy.

Saunders joined the project after the production designer changed from Neil Spisak to Mike Riva a few weeks into principle photography.

He said, "I've never been on a movie where the script changed so radically so often. I wouldn't be half-way through a keyframe when someone would look over my shoulder and say 'Oh. Didn't you know? It's no longer Venom in that scene, it's Goblin...' This is why we paint in layers...

"It was also pretty political with the change-over in art department. Jim Carson and I kept getting asked to do pretty much the same work, which was really demoralizing, particularly for him since he'd been on the project for over a year already doing great work. I felt really bad, it just wasn't a fun environment. The construction site set ended up being struck and rebuilt twice more for re-shoots. Ahh, this is how movies are made these days. And we wonder why they're so expensive..."
