See Vintage TERMINATOR Storyboards of the Terminator Operation

Check out vintage Terminator storyboards of Terminator making repairs!

Every Friday, I try and share artwork from a classic science fiction film or television show. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on The Terminator(1984).

One classic scene from the film is when the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) returns to his apartment and repairs the damage from a shotgun shot. It really shows how inhuman he is as he operates on himself without a hint of pain or concern.

You can watch the scene below:

Monstrous Unused TERMINATOR SALVATION Robot Concept Art by Miles Teves

Terminator Salvation concept art by Miles Teves
Check out Terminator Salvation concept art by Miles Teves

The design of the Terminator has changed over the years, but they're all cool. For Terminator Salvation they designed a bunch of unique robots, but one design was never built: The Black Terminator. Director McG said many of the machine designs were influenced by H.R. Giger and production designer Martin Laing gave the robots a black and degraded look since none of them are new.

Miles Teves is a Hollywood conceptual and storyboard artist, specializing in character design and make-up effects for films like Spider-Man (2002), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) and Batman and Robin (2002).

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

"This design was for a singular Terminator robot we referred to as the 'Black Terminator' or the 'Assassin'." Teves said, "He was to be a special robot dispatched to hunt down our hero relentlessly, much like the Terminators of the previous films. He was to be very tall, made of anodized, black-chromed, titanium, and to be outfitted with special weaponry. He was to be unique in some way, yet similar to the T-600.

"Here, in this drawing, I have borrowed elements from one my my favorite yet underrated robotic, movie villain designs, to try to give him a more interesting and menacing silhouette." - Miles Teves

163 TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY Storyboards and Concept Art by Iain McCaig and Steve Burg

The film Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) had some amazing visuals, but now see some of the artwork that brought this film to life. Included are designs for the omitted scene in the Cold Storage Hybermatrix factory that built the Terminators.

Two of the artists are Steve Burg (Prometheus,) and Iain McCaig (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, The Avengers)

Check out the rest of the images after the jump and click to enlarge.

Here's a description of the unfilmed scene from HopeoftheFuture.net
"Another omitted part from the future war is a the storage room for unactivated Terminators, including the one being used to protect John Connor in T2. After John Connor sends his father Kyle Reese back through time to meet both their destinies, the Resistance fighters were to gain access to a large room behind an ice-covered door; behind it lay hundreds of Terminators in suspended animation, waiting to be activated. The rows of cold-storage racks were designed as a one-third-scale foreground miniature, with only a few full-sized racks with life-casts of Arnold and possible a few other models (including a woman).

"The 'hybermatrix' design was an elaboration on the flesh-form mold designed for the T2 teaser spot, and was designed to suggest the 'molding' process used to grow flesh around the metal Terminator endoskeletons."

'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' Storyboards by Philip Norwood, Steve Berg and John Bruno

Today I thought I'd share some storyboards from Terminator 2. They were published in the now out-of-print book Terminator 2: Judgment Day- The Book of the Film- An Illustrated Screenplay (Applause Screenplay Series).

Director James Cameron is a respected artist in his own right and has done concept design and storyboards for many of his films.

The storyboards here are actually from Philip Norwood (Terminator 2: Judgment Day, TRON: Legacy, The Abyss) and Steve Burg (Prometheus, Star Trek: The Motion Picture) who worked with director Jim Cameron and visual effects supervisor John Bruno developing all the visual effects story boards.

Check out the rest of the images after the jump. Keep in mind some images are duplicates of others, but I didn't want to cut any of the pages up. Click on the pics to enlarge.

"These preliminary storyboards, drawn by Steve Burg, Philip Norwood, and John Bruno, depict the destruction of Skynet from the point of view of the beleaguered human' soldiers In the original Future War sequence. A wounded soldier is about to be blown away by a terminator endoskeleton; we cut close to see the light fade from the it's [sic] red eyes as it prepares to fire, With Skynet destroyed all of the remote-controlled machines freeze up, the Flying HKs failing out of the sky."

Terminatrix Makes A Grand Entrance In 'Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines' Storyboards

The female Terminator (T-X, "Terminatrix") had a great entrance in the storyboards for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003). The final product was a little less impressive.

Artist Miles Teves who worked on King Kong (2005), Terminator Salvation and many other films, described them this way.
These boards are a bit over-rendered for sure, but they get the point across. They were done early in the film from an ever-changing script.
In this scene, the T-X (Kristanna Sommer Loken) appears in a "Time Bubble" on Rodeo Drive.
