Stack and Scare by Invisible Creatures. From Product to Packaging, Blocks Don't Get Much Cooler Than These.

Over a year in the making, Stack And Scare™ is a new series of 4 stackable wooden monster block sets designed by Invisible Creature and produced by the coolest toy blocks store ever, Uncle Goose.

Each of the four sets contains 14-18 pieces in various shapes and sizes. Featuring eyeballs, teeth, horns, arms, rounded shapes for shoulders and eyes, monster heads, hands, feet, legs, torsos, patterns and more. Mix and match shapes or combine with other Stack And Scare™ sets to unleash endless (and taller) creature combinations!

The Products:

How They Are Made:

The Packaging:

Beautifully and meticulously crafted by the folks at Uncle Goose in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the blocks are made from FSC certified basswood, using non-toxic inks.

The Commercial:
The folks over at Invisible Creature thought it would be fitting to create a short “IC Filmmercial” featuring their wooden critters in action, so they enlisted their friends in Portland, Beautiful Eulogy, to create a score using the blocks themselves and the result is pretty fantastic:

You can purchase Stack And Scare™ directly from the designers , from Uncle Goose or independent toy stores everywhere.

Two Brothers Create An Elegant New Toy You'll Want To Steal From Your Kids: My Wooden Horse.

Brothers Netta and Avner Shalgi set out to create a simple, handmade, durable, eco-friendly wooden toy that would combine nostalgia and creativity - and they have succeeded. Now using kickstarter for funding, My Wooden Horse is a beautifully designed functional pull or push toy for children that is also a keepsake in an era when toys lose their shelf life in a matter of years.

Made up of more than 40 individual pieces, the toy horse is completely made out of wood, except for the ears and tail which are made of real leather. It moves just like a horse does and comes in a stunning array of color options.

Brothers Netta and Avner Shalgi made numerous observations on various types of horses. Sketching its elegant movement, muscle structure, and general pose led to the final proportions for the horse. Since every single part of My Wooden Horse is handmade using all wooden pieces, it is not feasible to manufacture them quickly enough for the amount of people who request them. This is where Kickstarter steps in.

Once they reach their goal on Kickstarter, they will have enough capital and resources to manufacture them at an industrial level, therefore providing them to everyone who wants one without having to skimp on quality.

Details from their kickstarter pitch:

Design
We made numerous observations on various types of horses. Sketching its elegant movement, muscle structure, and general pose led to the final proportions for our horse. We changed and stretched some of the characteristics as a means of encouraging its iconic “toy” and “humoristic” attributes.

Since each horse in the wild varies from color to color making each one unique, so can My Wooden Horse. The soon-to-be My Wooden Horse owner gets to choose among several options for their horse including the type of wood and, if they wish, what color of paint for their horse. For the client who prefers a natural wood finish, they have three options of wood to choose from: maple, oak, and beech.

Once the client chooses his or her color and wood combinations, we make an illustration and send to the client for approval.

Material
Each horse, unless specified otherwise, is made from high-quality, sturdy maple. However, if someone wishes a different type of wood, such as beech, oak or walnut, we are happy to meet their needs. While proceeding to industraial scale manufacturing we now have to consider many other factors such as factory location, avaliablilty of local raw material, costs and wood weight for shipment. According to the factory we shell work with- we will make a decition regardin our raw material for the horses.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly
They will only work with factories that use 100 percent eco-friendly products in the creation of each My Wooden Horse. All of the materials used will be made from sustainable resources; every time a tree is cut down, two more are planted. They also understand that happy employees make for happy horses, so they take pride knowing every employee is treated with the utmost respect.

Cutting
Each horse is assembled from more than 30 pieces, which essentially means there is a lot of cutting to be done throughout the process. For a single order, we cut it all manually. Though for a larger order, we use CNC milling to get a series of parts.

Shaping
It's a great joy to transform a raw chunk of wood into a perfectly smooth toy. The fine finish of each horse is due to the quality of and the amount of sanding that goes into creating each piece. It may take hours of sanding to get each leg, head, and shoe in the desired position and in a perfect shape. Hence, this is the part where most of the time is spent.

Their Moto:
We believe this is important because My Wooden Horse is more than just a toy; it is a way of life. Each horse represents an idea, an emotion. Since My Wooden Horse lasts a lifetime, so too will the memories. My Wooden Horse represents the simple, small things in life that sometimes get overshadowed by the shiny, new, tech-related products out there, but just as quickly as the newest phone model hits the markets, so too do those tech toys lose their allure. My Wooden Horse stores more memory and nostalgia than even the biggest of hard drives. We know everyone will agree!

Handcrafted Eco-Friendly Font Puzzles For Typophiles Hand Made in Italy.

above image is cropped

Fan of fonts? These beautifully designed and crafted painted plywood puzzles from Looodus are laser cut and hand-finished in the hills of Trivero in Piemonte, approximately two hour’s drive from Milan, Italy.

The puzzles are a true collaboration between designer and artisan, exploring the possibilities of computer aided design and hand finished products. A marriage of new technologies and pride in a craft handed down from father to son. Each puzzle goes through numerous checks to ensure a product which is precise and modern while being unmistakably artisanal.

Extreme care has been taken by Looodus to use a manufacturer who shares their values with attention to craft and quality while ensuring that the product is as environmentally friendly as possible. The process begins with the selection of wood used to create this beautiful piece. All the plywood is FSC (Forestal Stewardship Council) certified Poplar from the surrounding Padana Plane. This is where the majority of Poplar is grown for Italian paper and the carpentry sectors.

The concept for the Puzzle, like many of Looodus’ products, is born from observing the designer's baby daughter and her real life experience of being a first time parent. The Fonts were selected to be appropriate for their shape and size but also have a special place in the world of design. The colours have been checked and tested to offer a harmonious range across Green, Blue and Red.

“There are opportunities which arise every day to be creative and make quick fun toys for her, using the most rudimentary materials and sometimes these mini prototypes can become more refined products,” explains Kurt Stapelfeldt, Co-founder and Looodus Chief Designer.

IndyPlush - Endangered Species Plushies and Cool Stuffed Toys With A Conscience.

IndyPlush, who creates imaginative, adorable and hip plush toys made in Los Angeles, has just launched their Endangered Species collection (some shown above) from which a portion of all profits goes toward educational or wildlife protection organizations. But before showing you that collection, first a little background on the company and their original line of plush products.

IndyPlush Original Collection:

It all started with Plinio Garcia and Andrew Ruesch's son Luke, who was in Franceil Masi’s kindergarten class. Masi, who is not only an elementary school teacher, but also an artist as well as an author and illustrator of children's books, annually asks her students to draw a picture of an animal at the end of each school year. She then turns them into plush toys as a remembrance.

When Luke brought his plush dog home, Plinio Garcia and Andrew Ruesch loved it. At the next teacher conference, they asked Franceil if she wanted to start a business and that’s essentially how IndyPlush started. Now, Luke’s Dog is one of their best sellers.

Cute, cuddly and cozy with an edge (moustaches, skeletons and pirate patches), the toys are made with sustainable and eco-friendly materials in Los Angeles. They presently offer 26 different plush toys with prices ranging from $30 to $99 depending upon style and size.
