Planet of the Apes (1968) has a special place in my heart since I was a kid. I didn't understand the political, religious or philosophical implication of the film. I just like enjoyed watching the apes walking around.
As I got older, I realized what a masterpiece of film-making it is.
Italian Costume Designer Morton Haack worked on Planet of the Apes and the sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970).
I don't normally post costume design, but this one of more like concept art anyway. They didn't use terms like concept artist or illustrator until later, so I'll use the term loosely.

Planet of the Apes is a 1968 American science fiction film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, based on the 1963 French novel La Planète des singes by Pierre Boulle. The film stars Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter and Linda Harrison. It was the first in a series of five films made between 1968 and 1973, all produced by Arthur P. Jacobs and released by 20th Century Fox. The series was followed by a remake in 2001 and a reboot in 2011.
The film tells the story of an astronaut crew who crash-land on a strange planet in the distant future. Although the planet appears desolate at first, the surviving crew members stumble upon a society in which apes have evolved into creatures with human-like intelligence and speech. The apes have assumed the role of the dominant species and humans are mute creatures wearing animal skins.

I was wondering if Morton hack hade made anymore artwork sketches of the primitive humans in the original story. I have only ever seen one artwork sketch of the humans, but I have seen many more apes costume concept artwork.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed all the five films whilst I was growing up, I have seen quite a few of Morton Haacks Costume Concept Sketches for the films most of which you have displayed on the Web-Site.
ReplyDeleteSome of the one you have displayed have been cropped in half, but I have seen these images as whole sketches. Only about five of the original concepts for the costumes were used in the films, but a few years later some of the ideas were used in the short tv series of planet of the apes.
