CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER Hydra Vehicle Concept Designs by Daniel Simon

Check out Captain America: The First Avenger vehicle concept art by Daniel Simon!

The cars, planes and motorcycles for Captain America are mind-blowing in their iconic styling and futuristic look. One of the artists that helped create these stunning vehicles is Daniel Simon. Simon is a German-born concept designer, author, and producer who's worked on big budget movies like Tron: Legacy (2010), Oblivion (2013) and Prometheus (2012).

Here's how Simon's website describes the design process for Captain America: "Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger under the production design lead of Oscar-winning Rick Heinrichs and director Joe Johnston was an unusual design challenge. Lead Vehicle Designer Daniel Simon stepped out of his comfort zone to create vehicles with a believable look of the 40ies. ‘Simplicity’ was the main input given to Simon on how to translate the scripted vehicles into unique movie vehicles. Between November 2009 and June 2010 Simon created seven machines hand in hand with Heinrichs and Johnston at Marvel Studios in Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles. Intense research of both historically correct engineering and the Marvel Comic universe was part of every days work. Director Johnston – a blessed designer of Star Wars fame – guided Simon through the endless possibilities and variations, to find vehicles that could have truly existed, fulfill their purpose in the film’s story, and are feasible for manufacturing."

Schmidt Hydra Coupe
This imposing 1942 supercharged V16 CoupĂ© is the eccentric personal car of Marvel’s villain Johann Schmidt – the Red Skull. Designed by Lead Vehicle Designer Daniel Simon for the 2011 feature film ‘Captain America’, it is seen here in a special finish. Technically a roadster, Schmidt did not like to rename his beloved machine that began life as a CoupĂ©. At 7.62m length, and with 10 wheels driven by a 16 cylinder cube power engine, it is said to be the fastest car of the era.
First, here are some gorgeous photos of the finished car

Exclusive: Fascinating ENDER'S GAME Concept Art by Cenay Oekman

Ender's Game concept art by Cenay Oekman
Check out Ender's Game concept art by Cenay Oekman!

Ender's Game was released earlier this month and I talked briefly with illstrator Cenay Oekman about working on the film. I'm also sharing some unseen concept art from G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Captain America: The First Avenger

Cenay Oekman is a professional visual effects and concept artist who's worked on blockbuster movies like Inception(2010), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2012) and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013).

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

He started out as a concept artist for a game company in 1983 and switched to working in 3D. But Cenay felt that 3D visual artists are "only a number" and wanted to become a concept artist instead. His main goal in Ender's Game was to take the "visually stunning" work and add more detail and texturing to the final 3D models. Cenay was in charge of the 3D department guiding the build, especially the Eros landscape landing platform. It was designed mostly "free style."

Cenay said the most challenging part of the designs were the shuttles since they had "to be connected to things we know." The shape of the shuttle was based on an electric shaver. They then had to come up with engines and other details. The space station took a long time to do, but he says they're very happy with the results.

As a bonus, here are a couple of concept designs from G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Captain America: The First Avenger.

Official Ender's Game Synopsis

In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young children to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy, but strategically brilliant boy is pulled out of his school to join the elite. Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult war games, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School.
