Striking TOTAL RECALL Storyboards by Rob McCallum

Total Recall (2012) storyboards by Rob McCallum.
Check out Total Recall (2012) storyboards by Rob McCallum!

The 2012 remake of Total Recall was not a commercial success, but many were struck by the visual complexity of the film. For example, the late movie critic Roger Ebert gave Total Recall three out of five stars saying, "Total Recall is well-crafted, high energy sci-fi. Like all stories inspired by Philip K. Dick, it deals with intriguing ideas. It never touched me emotionally, though, the way the 1990 film did, and strictly speaking, isn't necessary."

Part of the reason for it's striking visuals is that the renowned film illustrator Patrick Tatoupolus is the production designer on the film. he assembled a top-notch crew of designers including Rob McCallum as one of the storyboard artists.

McCallum is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on blockbuster movies like Pacific Rim, The Thing (2011) and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2011). He shared some of the storyboards from the action-packed opening on his site www.mccallumart.com.

STARGATE 1994 Concept Art and Storyboards by Patrick Tatopoulus and Peter Rubin

Check out Stargate concept art and storyboards by Patrick Tatopoulus and Peter Rubin

Every Friday, I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Stargate (1994)

Director Roland Emmerich is planning to reboot Stargate as a trilogy, so here's a look back at the concept art for the original film.

Two of the artists working on the film are Patrick Tatopoulus (Super Mario Bros, Riddick) and Peter Rubin (Man of Steel,
Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome)

Patrick Tatopoulus
In an interview for VFXHQ he talked about designing for the film Stargate:
"When I showed [director Roland Emmerich] my designs from DRACULA," Tatopoulos recalled, "Roland asked me to help design sets and the warrior characters for STARGATE. Over a three-day period, I created one sketch per character, each in one day, and he approved all of my designs on the spot. Roland and I understand each other; we are in the same realm of imagination."

Tatopoulos used Egyptian themes "with a Japanese samurai influence" for the design concepts but said he used his own originality for the characters. "Basically, I open books every day of my life, but when I need to design something, I close all the books," Tatopoulus' explained. "If I have 20 books open in front of me for references, I get lost."

After working on the character and creature designs "Roland asked if I could then build the creatures, which became my first experience setting up my own shop," he reflected. "I found a large space in North Hollywood that I shared with Greg Jein who was creating the models. 45 people worked in the shop with me coordinating the creatures, including Russell Shenkle, the mechanical shop head. He became my right hand on the show and really made things happen."

Patrick Tatopoulos Lost 'Super Mario Bros (1983)' Concept Art Has Bite

A while back I posted a search for concept drawings from Patrick Tatopoulos (Underworld, Stargate, Face-Off) for the film Super Mario Bros (1983). Turns out I had some all along! I was going through photos on my hard drive and found this awesome one featuring King Koopa's de-evolution into a dinosaur at the end of the film.

There's a great article of Rob Burman, the man behind the production of the Koopa Creature, at SMBmovie.com that details how much work went into designing and building the creature for this sequence.

It could be fan art, but it matches his style perfectly. Plus, its signed and dated by Tatopoulos himself.

What do you think of his work on the film? If you saw the film, what did you think of it?

Can You Help Find 'Super Mario Bro' Concept Art?

The cult film Super Mario Brio (1993) has very little concept art available even though its created by one of the most innovative artists in the field. French artist Patrick Tatopoulos from Underworld (2003), Stargate (1994) and Independence Day (1996) was lead creature designer on the film.

While I thought the movie didn't do the game justice, the visuals are amazing! Knowing it was done by Mr. Tatopoulos makes sense.
The movie gets a 13% from Rotten Tomatoes, but the fans are going strong! They even host screenings of the movie in different cities like New York.
Super Mario Bros. is a 1993 American action film directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel. Based on the Super Mario Bros. video game and its entire franchise, the film features Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper and Samantha Mathis. It tells the story of the Mario brothers, Mario and Luigi, as they find a parallel universe, where King Koopa is a dictator. They have to rescue Princess Daisy and stop Koopa from attempting to merge the dimensions so that he could become a dictator of both worlds.

Super Mario Bros. was released on May 28, 1993, and received mainly negative reviews. It was a box office bomb, recouping only $21 million of its $48 million budget. Despite this, the film was nominated for two Saturn Awards (one for Best Costume, the other for Best Make-up). - Wikpedia

One of the most dedicated fans is the owner of SMBmovie.com. He posted on a message board asking if anyone has concept art from the film. I thought I'd help out by posting what he has on his awesome site and putting the call out.

Vin Diesel "Left For Dead" in Patrick Tatopoulos' Concept Art

Vin Diesel loves to tease out projects on his Facebook page. "Early Riddick concept art... first frame of a 2D Motion Choreography Study. Grrrr...The Furian... left for dead.." Vin is talking about the David Twoy directed sequel to Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick called Chronicles of Riddick: Dead Man Stalking (2011).
Official Synopsis: In the upcoming third installment of the popular sci-fi franchise, Riddick get's betrayed by the Necromonger army and is left for dead on a desolate planet. He has to fight for survival against alien predators and must deal with two squads of bounty hunters, who are coming after him to collect the bounty for the most wanted man in the galaxy.

The drawing by Patrick Tatopoulos is amazing for its sense of despair and isolation. Riddick is broken and defeated lying covered in muck. Then, a vicious looking creature stalks him ready to bite. Truly amazing.

The rest of the images were screen caps from a video shown to investors by "OneRace Films" Diesel's production company.

The man Riddick, looking spiky.

A "Battle Study" of the fiercest creature on the planet. The Apex predator.

The mercenaries arrive by spacecraft.

The mercenaries ride "Jetcycles" that are part hovercraft and Scud missile.
