GREEN LANTERN and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER Concept Art by Henrik Tamm

I ran into some concept art on Henrik Tamm's site for Green Lantern (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger. So, I had to ask him about some of them.

Henrik Tamm is a Swedish professional conceptual designer in Hollywood who has helped create the worlds of Shrek (2001), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), among many other films.

Check out after the jump for alternate views of the Guardian planet OA, Parallax and a much bigger Training Ground. Plus, see some cool concept art of Captain America's coolest moments.

Green Lantern
The concept art is actually from the many brainstorming sessions the illustrators had with director Martin Campbell during the early days of development of the film.

Henrik said, "We were throwing out all kinds of ideas, trying to find our way in how OA worked, and why, and what happened there, etc etc. The script wasn't working at all at that point, so he relied much on the concept guys. It was a really fun process!" - Henrik Tamm

"The control room was fun. I came up with the idea of using fractals as a base for the technology. I thought it made sense, since it's at the very foundation of how our universe works. Plus it looked cool!" - Henrik Tamm

He's currently promoting his children's book Ninja Timmy and the Stolen Laughter

Here's the description:
"In the city of Elyzandrium, bamboo skyscrapers spiral into a sky filled with steam-powered air balloons and other odd-looking flying machines. Crowded in the dusty streets below, a million other vehicles crawl through the afternoon traffic.

"Laboring under the weight of their new invention – an automated orange-peeling machine - we meet Timmy the cat, and his pals Simon the mink and the pig brothers Jasper and Casper (who are really good at math). They are carrying their newly finished contraption across town, through crowded streets and dark alleys, hoping to sell it to a local fruit merchant.

So begins an action-packed adventure, in which they have to uncover the mystery of why the children of Elyzandrium have lost their ability to laugh. They soon befriend Alfred the toymaker, who with his magical devices helps turn the friends into a crime-fighting gang of ninjas!

"It was during a visit to old Beijing that Henrik Tamm was inspired with the idea for this book. On a rooftop he encountered a small grey street cat that insisted on having a piece of the cream cake he was eating. The following day he visited an old toy shop that has been owned by the same family for generations. The idea for a book took shape. Ninja Timmy and the Stolen Laughter is the first in a series about this intrepid cat and his wily gang.

"A perfect read-out-loud book for all to enjoy!"

The book is only being published in Sweden (his home country), but Henrik says talks with US/UK publishers are under way. Even film producers have been looking at it! Find out more at Bonnie Group Agency and Facebook. (Swedish site)

Official Synopsis
Bringing the enduringly popular superhero to the big screen for the first time, “Green Lantern” stars Ryan Reynolds (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) in the title role, under the direction of Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”).

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Campbell directs “Green Lantern” from a screenplay by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldenberg, story by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim, based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics.

Sanders (“Revolutionary Road”) as Carl Ferris, Carol’s aircraft designer dad; Temuera Morrison (“Star Wars” Episodes II and III) as Abin Sur, Jordan’s alien predecessor; Taika Waititi (TV’s “The Flight of the Conchords”) as flight navigator Tom Kalmaku, Hal’s good friend and confidante; Academy Award® nominee Angela Bassett (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as enigmatic government scientist Amanda Waller; and Academy Award® winner Tim Robbins (“Mystic River”) as Hector’s influential father, Senator Robert Hammond.

The film is being produced by Donald De Line (“The Italian Job”) and Greg Berlanti (upcoming “Life As We Know It”). Herbert W. Gains and Andrew Haas serve as executive producers. Geoff Johns and Lucienne Papon are co-producing.

Official Synopsis
Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by “vita-rays.” Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.
